Vintage 1965–72 3D Mesh Snake Necklace/Belt, Unsigned

This necklace/belt was my mother’s who wore it in the late 60’s early 70’s and has been stored since.

Mesh is cylindrical perfect without any dents. It measures 30” long including tips, 27” without. Your styling choices can be a long necklace, double it up, use as a belt, a hatband, arm or wrist bracelet. The clasp style is an older fold-over safety clasp.

The sculpted serpent head and tail have a cast, almost Brutalist/Neo-Baroque quality that was common in the late ’60s along with the Egyptian Revival trend was especially strong after the 1963–1964 King Tut exhibitions and continued into the early 1970s. Snake motifs were very fashionable during that period.

Unsigned. Extremely well made. Very similar to a Whiting Davis. 

That said, it’s still a very attractive piece. The snake heads have nice sculptural detail, and the woven mesh is heavier than the inexpensive versions. The gold finish shows normal wear and oxidation, consistent with vintage gold-tone costume jewelry. A quality costume piece!
